The Los Alerces Region is an organisation that groups a number of towns and communities on the Chubut Andes, within a pristine area of the utmost natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy a great variety of activities there, ranging from leisurely recreation to the practice of the most exciting and demanding adventure sports. The region's history and cultural heritage is also very interesting.

There are many crystal-clear lakes, unpolluted rivers and pristine natural forests in this region, both within the National Park and in the bordering areas. Most of the human settlements here are small, but with a growing service infrastructure that caters to visitors. The many activities and natural wonders make even a long stay seem brief in this lovely place: fishing, trekking, mountain biking, camping, white-water rafting, photographic safaris, horse riding; all of these and much more add to the cultural interest of the Welsh colony saga, the Butch Cassidy and the Cacique Inacayal stories, and the charming Old Patagonian Express steam train.

The Region and the National Park have been christened after the name of these venerable, thousands-of-years-old trees. The Los Alerces National Park covers an area of 260,000 ha ( 650,000 acres ), the alerce trees thriving in its western, most humid section. There is an unforgettable boat excursion taking visitors to one of these groves, including a short trek to “The Grandfather” tree; a giant, 2,600 years old specimen. The Park is practically uninhabited and free of pollution. It is home to an impressive chain of great lakes and rivers, and dense, pristine forests that climb the tall, snow-capped Andes peaks.

Esquel, with a population of 30,000, is the biggest and most developed city in the region. Trevelin, Corcovado, Tecka, Cholila, and the Los Alerces National Park are the rest of the small towns and localities offering services and their unsurpassed natural scenery to tourists. The Andes “cordillera” is the backbone of this region, and visitors can travel alongside it on adequate, low-traffic roads, enjoying an uncommon variety of landscapes and activities on their course. Just a few kilometres away to the east of the Cordillera the green mountainsides and valleys give way to the spectacular, open Patagonian steppe, a legendary territory populated by guanacos, eagles, ostriches, and huge flocks of sheep.

The Los Alerces Region is one of the best places in Patagonia to fly-fish for big rainbow, brook, and brown trout, as well as landlocked and Pacific (Chinook)salmon. Within the National Park, some of the ideal places are the Rivadavia, Menéndez, Verde, Futalaufquen and Krugger lakes, and the Arrayanes, Desaguadero and Frey rivers. Outside the park there are many options too: Arroyo Pescado (a spring creek), the Willmanco, Esquel, la Zeta , and La Larga lagoons, all near Esquel; Lake Rosario, Amotui Quimey reservoir, and the Futaleufú, Nant y Fall, and Corinto rivers near Trevelin; the Corcovado river, and the Vintter, Guacho, los Niños, and del Engaño lakes in the Corcovado area; and finally the lake Cholila and rivers Carrileufú and Trigre in the Cholila area.

This is a trip not to be missed, as this narrow gauge steam train is really unique. This genuine rolling museum dates back to the beginning of last century, and is a much-cherished feature in the region. Foreign and Argentine visitors love to travel in its antique, iron-stove-warmed wooden coaches, looking out the windows towards the majestic Patagonian landscape. They admire its jet-black, venerable Henschel and Baldwin locomotives; a real chance to travel back through time to an era when the steam train opened the way for progress in one of the wildest regions of the world.
